Automatable Splicing Method for Steel Cord Conveyor Belts using High-Pressure Water Jetting

Description

Due to logistic reasons, conveyor belts are transported segmentally. To form an endless belt, the individual segments are spliced at the system. In the splice, the tension force of the belt is only transferred via core rubber, which makes splices the weakest points of a conveyor belt. Therefore, conveyor belt splices are a major research focus at the Institute of Transport and Automation Technology (ITA), formerly known as IFH, which has been testing conveyor belt splices for over 40 years. With a total amount of over 1,000 tested splices according to DIN 22110-3, it is evident that the quality of splices depends on the experience of technicians. The reason for this are the mainly manually performed working steps using simple cutting tools, such as knifes or piano wires. The hand-operated techniques not only result in a varying quality but also make the procedure very time-consuming. Therefore, the ITA and the Institute of Materials Science (IW) are cooperating in the development of an automatable splicing method for steel cord conveyor belts using high-pressure water jet technology for the preparation process to ensure a constant splice quality and to achieve a measurable time reduction as expedient benefit. The water jetting process shall replace all manually performed working steps and solve the ongoing disadvantages. [673]
