Description

Herein the use of an integrated RFID (radio frequency identification) reader array into belt conveyor systems is introduced. Apart from the identification that RFID systems are widely used for, the described system can track the position of RFID-equipped transported packages, thus enabling an automated handling. The electromagnetic effects and principles, on which the positioning of HF (high frequency) RFID tags is based on, are briefly explained. In continuation and based on these principles, the construction of the tracking system is presented and its functionality explained in detail. In conclusion it is demonstrated how the tracking of HF tags can contribute to a fully automated handling of cardboard packages and the system performance is compared to conventional tracking systems and with similar RFID-assisted ones.
