Idler test stand

General information

The IPH has extensive knowledge in the field of in-plant transport and the associated automation and conveyor technology. For manufacturers or users of idlers, we offer independent testing of idlers with regard to their running properties in accordance with the test standards DIN 22112, SAB 1313 and DIN ISO 21940-11. For this purpose, we have the necessary measurement technology and corresponding modern test equipment at our disposal. This enables us to measure, among other things, running resistance, balance quality, runout tolerance, axial displacement and tightness against water and dust.

The tests provide you with a statement on the behavior of the idlers during operation as well as an assessment of the contribution of the idler characteristics to the energy requirements of the belt conveyor systems.

Standard test methods and typical applications

We offer the following testing services for idlers of bulk and unit load conveying systems:

  • Determination of idler dimensions and weights as well as key surfaces of the axle ends (DIN 22112)
  • Determination of the running resistance (DIN 22112)
  • Determination of the concentricity tolerance (DIN 22112)
  • Determination of axial displaceability (DIN 22112)
  • Determination of the breakaway mass (SAB 1313)
  • Determination of balance quality (DIN ISO 21940)
  • Determination of tightness against water and dust (DIN 22112-3)
  • Tests according to customer requirements also outside the DIN specifications

Technical data

A modern test stand with a climatic chamber is available for carrying out the idler roller tests. In this climate chamber, the temperature can be set to values from -40 °C to 60 °C, and relative humidity of up to 100 % is also possible. In this way, a wide range of environmental conditions can be simulated in order to test the behavior of idlers under near-operational conditions.

The technical data of the test facility for measuring the running resistance are listed below:

  • Idlers with main dimensions according to DIN 15207 and DIN 22112
  • Maximum shell diameter: 250 mm
  • Maximum axle length: 1500 mm
  • Maximum superimposed load: 3 kN
  • Maximum test speed: 5 m/s
  • Ambient temperature: -40 °C to 60 °C
  • Relative humidity up to 100

Driving idlers on the test bench

The idler test rig at IPH can also be used to test driving idlers that have their own electric motor. In this way, IPH can support manufacturers and research institutions in the development of driving idlers.

On the test rig, the driving idler is operated at a defined speed. The drive wheel of the test rig is pressed against the driving idler with a defined force and brakes it with a counter-torque. The influencing factors of load, speed and counter-torque can be varied. Of particular interest is the startup behavior of the driving idlers under different conditions.
